With an aim to cut water loss, produce renewable energy, and enhance safety and hygiene, the Delhi government is exploring an ambitious plan to repair the 17-km section of Munak canal in the Capital and cover it with solar panels.
“The Munak canal is a lifeline for Delhi’s water supply. But in its current form, it is also a major source of water loss and pollution. Our plan to cover it with solar panels will help us save water, produce clean power, and make the canal safer for the people of Delhi,” Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Sunday. The remarks come after the Minister inspected the canal last week with senior officials.
The solar-panel cover aims to minimise water loss, generate renewable energy, deter garbage disposal, and reduce safety hazards. The project draws inspiration from Gujarat, where canal-based solar installations have proven successful in optimising space usage, conserving water, and producing clean electricity, according to a government statement.
The Munak canal has two main branches — the Delhi Sub-Branch (DSB) and the Carrier Lined Channel (CLC) — that are suffering from significant leakage and inefficiency. Inspection findings reveal approximately 30% water loss due to seepage and evaporation from the DSB, while the CLC experiences about 5% water loss, as per the statement.
Garbage dumping and the risk of drowning are among other public concerns. “Open and unguarded stretches of the canal pose a danger to both residents and passersby,” the statement added.
“This initiative is not just about saving water — it’s about protecting lives, generating clean energy, and making Delhi’s water infrastructure smarter and safer. We are committed to adopting innovative solutions that serve our people and protect our resources for generations to come,” asserted Singh.
The Munak canal extends about 102 km, with approximately 17 km falling within Delhi and the rest in Haryana. Discussions with Haryana are ongoing for efficient management and maintenance, said the government.
