In a significant development shaking the South Indian film industry, 46-year-old Tamil actor Srikanth, who has acted in over 54 films across Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema, was arrested by the Greater Chennai Police on Monday in connection with a narcotics case. The arrest came after an intensive probe into a suspected drug network linked to the actor.

The case first came to light following the detention of T. Prasad, a member of the AIADMK IT wing, who was allegedly involved in supplying banned substances. During Prasad’s interrogation, officials reportedly uncovered evidence that pointed to Srikanth’s active involvement in the illicit drug circuit.

On Monday afternoon, Srikanth was brought to the Nungambakkam Police Station, where he was subjected to rigorous questioning for over nine hours. As part of the standard procedure, authorities collected a blood sample, which later tested positive for the presence of narcotics in his system.

Before his court appearance, Srikanth was taken to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for a routine medical examination. He was then presented before Magistrate Dhayalan of the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore. Due to procedural reasons, the hearing was held at the Magistrate’s residence in the Judicial Officers’ Quarters in Chennai’s Egmore locality. Srikanth’s legal representation was led by his advocate, Vignesh Ramanadhan.

Following the hearing, the court remanded Srikanth to judicial custody until July 7, 2025. Police sources confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full scope of the network.

Srikanth, who made his television debut in 1999 with K Balachander’s Jannal – Marabu Kavithaigal, gained widespread recognition after his silver screen debut in the 2002 Tamil film Roja Kootam. Over the years, he has established himself as a prominent actor in the South Indian entertainment industry, with roles spanning various genres and languages.

The arrest has sparked discussions about the growing concerns of substance abuse within the film industry, reminiscent of the recent case involving Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko. Shine was arrested earlier this year after a co-actress accused him of sexual harassment while allegedly under the influence of drugs, further drawing attention to the dark undercurrents of drug misuse in the entertainment sector.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tackling narcotics-related offenses and ensuring accountability, regardless of stature or profession. Further updates on Srikanth’s case are awaited as the investigation progresses.
