Police Recreate Crime Scene; Survivor Records Statement Before Court—Updates

The Kolkata Police on Saturday recreated the crime scene at the South Calcutta Law College in the city, where the 24-year-old student was allegedly gang-raped on June 25. The survivor of the alleged assault was also taken to the site where the crime took place.

Earlier today, the survivor recorded her statement in the case at the Alipore court.

South Suburban Division DC Bidisha Kalita said: “The crime scene was recreated today by the police and the statement of the victim has been recorded.”

Here are the top updates of the Kolkata gang-rape case:

  • The Kolkata Police formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Suburban Division), Pradip Ghoshal, to carry out the investigation. The SIT is expected to record a confidential statement from the victim and her parents.
  • CCTV footage from the law college has corroborated the allegations made by the survivor in her police complaint.
  • The footage, spanning over seven hours from 3.30 PM to 10.50 PM on June 25, has captured movements around the premises of the law college, including the first-year student being forced into the guard’s room, where she has alleged the assault took place.
  • Investigators have also collected evidence from three other locations on the college campus, including the students’ union room, the washroom, and the guard’s room. The evidence also supports the victim’s claims, PTI reported.
  • Police have also recovered a 1.5 minute video clip from the mobile phone of one of the accused. “A forensic analysis of the video is underway. We’re trying to determine if it was shared or deleted,” the officer said.
  • The college security guard Pinaki Banerjee was also arrested on Saturday morning after the police found his statements to be incoherent. “The guard did nothing to protect the victim. Evidence suggests he left the scene even as the victim was forcibly taken into his room by the main accused, while the other two stood guard outside,” the officer told PTI.
  • With the security guard’s arrest, the total number of arrests in the case are now four. Manojit Mishra (an alumnus and ad-hoc staff), along with current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, have been sent to police custody till July 1.
  • The survivor has alleged that the gang-rape occurred after she rejected a marriage proposal from Manojit Mishra. “Going by the sequence of events, it appears that the prime accused tortured the victim after she rejected his marriage proposal. This has been corroborated by the circumstantial evidence,” the officer said. Police are now investigating if the crime was planned.
  • Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Saturday wrote to West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, directing him to take urgent action in connection with the crime. Calling the crime “grave,” she wrote: “This incident is not just an individual crime; it’s a blow to our collective sense of security. It demands a swift and institutional response from the state.”
  • The NCW chairperson also sought a confidential and comprehensive internal and external medical examination report of the survivor within three days.
