A 30-year-old doctor, the son of a local BJP leader, died after being stabbed in Haryana’s Jind district late on Thursday night while returning home with two others, the police said. The incident took place in Safidon and has led to protests by the victim’s family, who have refused to claim his body until the culprits are caught.
Vikas Sharma, a prominent doctor in the city, was returning home with his brother-in-law and a friend, also a doctor, when they were attacked by unidentified people near his residence.
According to the police, when the trio reached Rampura Road, a group of men allegedly stopped their car, misbehaved with them, and attacked them with sharp weapons. All three sustained injuries in the attack and were rushed to a private hospital in Panipat. While Vikas succumbed to injuries, the two others are undergoing treatment, the police added.
Vikas’s father, Shiv Kumar Sharma, had been associated with the BJP for a long time and was a former mandal adhyaksh in Jind, the police said. Vikas ran a private hospital in Safidon. He got married about 18 months ago and is survived by his wife and a five-month-old daughter, the police added.
“The family hails from Muana village in Safidon in Jind district. Vikas was running a private hospital, Anuj Multispecialty Hospital, in Safidon. Vikas sustained three stab injuries, including one that punctured his heart. He died due to excessive bleeding. The other two are out of danger,” one of the police officials investigating the case said.
“The family is suspecting some professional rivalry behind the attack. We are also scanning the area’s CCTV footage to ascertain the assailants’ identities. Special teams have been constituted to identify and nab the culprits,” the official added.
Shiv Kumar Sharma told the media that the incident raised concerns over the law and order situation in the state. “It is shocking how people can kill anybody on the roads in Haryana. If a BJP leader’s son can be killed in this manner, how will a common man feel safe?” he asked.
