Kulgam gunfight enters third day

SRINAGAR: A fierce gunbattle between security forces and terrorists in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered the third day Sunday, turning into one of the longest and most intense counterinsurgency operations this year in the Valley.The Army has confirmed the killing of one terrorist and police sources that of another, with the identities and affiliation of the duo yet to be established.Heavy firing and explosions continued through Saturday night at the site in Akhal Khulsan forests. The gunfight had broken out Friday evening after Army, J&K Police and Special Operations Group launched a combing operation, based on inputs about the presence of three to five terrorists. The forces came under fire during the search and retaliated.Officials said Sunday the cordon had been tightened to prevent the remaining terrorists from escaping, and the operation may continue for some time. Senior officials are monitoring the situation.Confirming the death of one terrorist on Saturday, the Army’s Chinar Corps had said troops responded with calibrated fire and “tightened the noose”.
