ITR Filing 2025: Is the deadline extended to file income tax return? Know everything here

As the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season is going on, taxpayers are preparing documents to file their return. Now the question is what is the last date to file ITR? Is the deadline extended or same to file ITR for non-audit cases?

Last date to file ITR 2024-25

The last date to file ITR is September 15, 2025.

Is the ITR filing deadline extended?

No, the deadline to file the ITR is same as earlier.

As the September 15 deadline is nearing, taxpayers are facing glitches while filing their return. Since this shortened reporting window is becoming a bottleneck for them, numerous experts and chartered accountants are urging the government to extend the deadline.

Why did CBDT extend the deadline from July 31 to September 15?

As the structure of ITR forms was altered as a result of the Budget 2024 modifications to the income tax regulations, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the ITR filing deadline. This includes more data fields to improve transparency, new columns for tax credit claims, and updated reporting of capital gains.

Taxpayers facing issues

Users were facing issues downloading their Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) last week. These forms are crucial to file ITR.

“Taxpayers and professionals are currently unable to access AIS & TIS on the IT portal… @IncomeTaxIndia should communicate via Twitter to inform users about the error and provide an estimated timeline,” Mumbai-based chartered accountant Chirag Chauhan posted on X.

Another CA Himank Singla requested the government to extend deadline for ITR, tax audits, GST annual filings, and company law audits. “These should be announced well in advance to prevent last-minute chaos,” the CA wrote.
