The Income Tax Department on Friday made available the excel utilities for ITR-2 and ITR-3 forms on its e-filing portal. These forms are essential for taxpayers with income from capital gains, cryptocurrency, or other complex income types who do not qualify to file simpler returns.
Earlier, the department had only released ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-4 forms for AY 2025–26, both in online and excel utility formats. These two forms cater to individuals with income from salary, one house property, and small businesses under presumptive taxation.
Utilities now live on IT portal
Announcing the launch, the Income Tax Department said on X: “Attention Taxpayers! Excel Utilities of ITR-2 and ITR-3 for AY 2025-26 are now live and available for filing.”
“Under the download section of the income tax department’s e-filing ITR portal, you can navigate to download the ITR-2 and ITR-3 utilities. Once downloaded, you will get a windows zip file from which the excel file can be obtained,” it added.

Who should file ITR-2 and ITR-3?
As per the department’s website, ITR-2 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) not eligible to file ITR-1. Taxpayers who do not have income from profits and gains of business or profession, or who do not receive remuneration such as interest, salary, or commission from a partnership firm, also fall under the ITR-2 category.
Individuals who are required to club the income of their spouse, minor child, or others—if such income falls under the eligible categories—must also use ITR-2. ITR-3, on the other hand, is intended for individuals and HUFs with income from business or profession, including income from proprietary businesses or professional services.
Deadline extended to September 15
The Income Tax Department had earlier extended the deadline for filing returns for Assessment Year 2025–26 from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced the extension, stating it was “in view of the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs and considering the time required for system readiness and rollout of Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26.”
The move, according to the IT Department, aims to address concerns raised by taxpayers and tax professionals. “This extension is expected to mitigate the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide adequate time for compliance, thereby ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process,” the department said.
