Bumrah on top
13 The number of occasions Jasprit Bumrah has claimed a five-wicket haul in Tests on foreign soil, which is now a new Indian record. His record-breaking performance came in the first innings of the Lord’s Test, where he surpassed Kapil Dev’s tally of 12 five-wicket hauls. Kapil held the record for over 36 years, thus making Bumrah’s achievement a significant chapter in the history of Indian cricket. The second table below lists the Indian bowlers who, over the years, have held the record.

9 The number of batters to aggregate 3000-plus Test runs against one single opponent in Test cricket history. Joe Root’s achievement in the Lord’s Test is not just a personal milestone but a significant moment in Test cricket history. He became the latest to join the elite group of batters who have aggregated 3000 Test runs against a single opponent, a group led by the Aussie legend, Don Bradman (5028 runs against England; the following best being Englishman Jack Hobbs with 3636 runs against Australia). Root’s feat is the first of its kind, as he is the first batter in Test cricket to go past 3000 runs against India. Australian Ricky Ponting, with 2555 runs, is second in the list.
The table below lists the batters who have achieved the distinction of being the first to reach milestones in multiples of 500 runs against India in Test matches.

21 The number of innings Jamie Smith took to reach 1000 Test runs of his career (in the Lord’s Test match) is the fewest by an English wicket-keeper in Test cricket. It is interesting to note that Smith is now the second quickest in terms of innings, for a Test wicket-keeper, with South African Quinton de Kock doing it in 20 innings in January 2017 (note: de Kock did not keep wickets in the debut Test against Australia in Port Elizabeth in February 2014, A. B. de Villiers did the keeping duties). Smith’s achievement of reaching 1000 Test runs in exactly one year (365 days) is now a new Test record, as this is by far the quickest in terms of days by any Test wicket-keeper, surpassing the record of Aussie wicketkeeper Brad Haddin who took 1 year, 1 month, 18 days (414 days) to reach his landmark on 11 July 2009, exactly 16 years ago.

211 The number of catches taken by Joe Root in his career. This is now the most by any Test fielder, going past the previous record of 210 catches held by India’s Rahul Dravid. Root achieved this new record when he claimed the catch of Karun Nair on the second day of the Lord’s Test match. The last English fielder before Root to hold this Test record was Colin Cowdrey, who led with 120 catches from 1968 to 1984.

Postscript:
* Joe Root’s century at Lord’s is his 11th against India, thus emulating Aussie Steve Smith’s tally. Gary Sobers (WI), Viv Richards (WI) and Ricky Ponting (Aus) follow them with eight Test centuries against India.
* India, after three matches, has hit 37 sixes in this series, which is the most by a side in an away series. The previous record of 32 sixes was held by the West Indies (in India in 1974/75 in five Tests) and New Zealand (vs Pakistan in UAE in 2014/15 in three Tests).
All records are correct and updated until 22 July 2025.
