First successful robotic surgery performed at Sassoon General Hospital | Pune News


The B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital successfully performed its first robotic gallbladder surgery on a young woman patient.

She was admitted with complaints of abdominal pain and was diagnosed with gallstones. The surgery was successfully carried out using advanced robotic technology, an official statement issued here said.

The procedure was performed by a surgical team comprising Dr Lata Bhoir, Dr Aashish Chavan, Dr Sagar Kurkure and Dr Purnima Aggarwal.

The anaesthesia team included Dr Surekha Shinde, Dr Neha Kamble, Dr Sujit Kshirsagar, and Dr Anuja. The nursing team including Surgery Sister Incharge Rajashri Kanade, Ujwala Garud, Shama Bandisode and staff nurse Sadhna Dhomse also provided excellent care during the procedure.

Over the past few months, dedicated training was provided to doctors, nurses, and supporting staff for the use of robotic surgery.

A high-fidelity simulator was used for skill development. A state-of-the-art dedicated robotic operation theatre has been established at the hospital.

“Robotic surgery costs ₹3–5 lakh in private hospitals. However, Sassoon General Hospital is offering this service free of cost to underprivileged patients,” said Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean, B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital.
