Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the nomination process for the Vice-President of India election will remain open until August 21. Polling is scheduled for September 9, with counting to take place the same day.
He also said that in the NDA Parliamentary Party flood leaders meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, it was unanimously decided that the NDA has given authorisation to start the process, including the selection of a candidate for PM and the leader of the house in Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda.
Riijiu, speaking to news agency ANI, said that the decision taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be accepted by all the NDA parties.
“The date for the filing of nomination for the election of the Vice-President of India will be till 21st of August. The polling will be held on 9th September and counting will also be on the same day. EC Issues Notification For Election Of Vice President
On Thursday, the Election Commission issued a notification for September 9 election to the office of the vice president, kickstarting the nomination process. According to the notification, August 21 is the last date for filing nominations and the documents will be scrutinised on August 22.August 25 is the last date for the withdrawal of nomination. The vice president’s post fell vacant on July 21 following the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who cited health reasons for his decision. His term was to end in August 2027.
According to constitutional provisions, in case of a mid-term poll, the incumbent gets a full five-year term. A person cannot be elected as the vice president unless he is a citizen of India, has completed 35 years of age and is qualified for election as a member of the Rajya Sabha. A person is also not eligible if he holds any office of profit under the government of India or a state government or any subordinate local authority. The ruling NDA has a comfortable edge in the vice presidential elections.The vice president is elected by the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, with nominated members of the Upper House also eligible to vote.
