Cabinet gives nod to 4 new semiconductor factories, Lucknow Metro Line expansion at Rs 10,401 crore outlay

The Union Cabinet — chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — made a number of major decisions at its meeting on Tuesday, including the establishment of four semiconductor facilities in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab with an outlay of Rs 4,600 crore. A proposal to build Phase 1B of Lucknow Metro Rail Project in Uttar Pradesh with an investment of Rs 5,801 crore was also approved.

Both announcements confirmed earlier Zee Business newsbreaks.

Here are key takeaways from the August 12 Cabinet meeting:

Odisha, Punjab, Andhra to get semiconductor units

The additional four semiconductor projects — taking the total number to 10 — are part of the Narendra Modi government’s India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), an flagship programme aimed at establishing a robust semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country.

They are also estimated to contribute to the Centre’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) ambition.

The four projects are known as:

  • SiCSem
  • Continental Device India
  • 3D Glass Solutions
  • Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies

Cumulatively, the four facilities are expected to generate employment for 2,034 skilled professionals and lead to several indirect jobs.

The 10 projects are located in six states, with a total outlay of around Rs 1.6 lakh crore.

Lucknow Metro Rail Project Phase-1B

The 1B phase of the Metro line will be spread across 11.2 kilometres, comprising 12 stations (seven underground and five elevated).

After the completion of the project, Lucknow will have 34 kilometres of active Metro railway lines.

The project aims to integrate key Old Lucknow areas, including:

  • Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj and Chowk
  • King George’s Medical University and other critical healthcare facilities
  • Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, Rumi Darwaza and other tourist attractions
  • Culinary destinations

The project is expected to lead to reduced traffic congestion in the city.

700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi District

With an outlay of Rs 8,146.2 crore, a project involving the construction of Tato-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi District also received Cabinet’s nod.

The project is expected to be completed over the next 72 months.

With an installed capacity of 700 MW (4 x 175 MW), the project is estimated to produce 2738.06 MU of energy, with the generated power set to help improve the supply in the state and help in balancing of the national grid.

This project will be implemented through a JV between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and the state government. Besides, the Centre will extend budgetary support worth Rs 458.8 crore for the construction of roads, bridges, and an associated transmission line. A Central Financial Assistance of Rs 436.1 crore will also be provided towards the equity share of the state.
