Cabinet clears Rs 3,626 crore Pune metro phase-2 project to boost east-west connectivity


The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project at an estimated cost of Rs 3,626.24 crore. The project aims to enhance East-West connectivity in Pune by extending the current Vanaz-Ramwadi Metro corridor through two elevated corridors: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B).

Together, these new extensions will span 12.75 km and add 13 new stations to the city’s metro network. The corridors will cover fast-developing residential and commercial zones such as Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, Chandani Chowk, and Wagholi—ensuring smoother public transport access to IT parks, educational institutions, and key transit points.

The cost of the project will be equally borne by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and international bilateral/multilateral funding agencies. The project aligns with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and is scheduled for completion within four years. Implementation will be carried out by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which has already initiated pre-construction activities including surveys and detailed designs.

The extension will also integrate with Pune Metro’s other major lines—Line-1 (Nigdi to Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi to District Court)—via an interchange at the District Court station. This multimodal connectivity is expected to significantly increase the public transport share in Pune and provide faster, safer, and environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

In addition to easing traffic congestion on arterial roads such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, the metro expansion will integrate intercity bus routes from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, and Ahilya Nagar, making it easier for passengers to transition to the metro system within the city.

Daily ridership on Line-2 is projected to rise to 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057, underscoring the long-term benefits of this expansion. The Union Cabinet described this strategic move as a step toward unlocking Pune’s economic potential and fostering inclusive urban growth through sustainable mass transit infrastructure.
