The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has made free bus travel on the BRTS available for people who are at least 65 years old and those who are differently-abled.

Until Friday, free travel passes were limited to those aged 75 and above, while differently-abled people were entitled to a 40% concession on fares.

Announcing the decision on Thursday, AMC Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said, “The facility aims to make public transportation more inclusive and accessible”.

To avail of the facility, eligible citizens can collect their free passes from two designated BRTS stations: Jhansi Ki Rani and Soni Ni Chali. Additionally, the AMC has introduced a digital option for convenience: commuters can scan a QR code and fill out an online form to receive their pass.

The BRTS is operated by the AMC’s Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd, where the Mayor is the chairperson and the standing committee chairperson is a director.

The AJL operates on a 160 km route with 380 buses on which around 2.20 lakh passengers ride daily.
