Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta’s love story began as just like a typical Bollywood romance. The duo were neighbours in Mumbai, and they used to exchange glances from opposite windows until Aamir came forward to confess his feelings for Reena, which began a whirlwind tale of romance. Reena, who had a reserved and ‘hard to impress’ nature, eventually agreed to date him at 19, and they tied the knot in 1986. After being together through thick and thin for 16 years with two kids, their marriage came to an end. In a recent interview, Aamir recalled how he tried to harm himself following the end of his marriage.
Aamir Khan reveals he became a heavy drinker after his divorce from Reena Dutta
Aamir Khan recently sat down for an interview with The Lallantop where he made a heartbreaking confession about how his divorce with Reena Dutta took an emotional toll on him. He explained that, unlike the media’s description, his separation was difficult. To cope with the same, he used to avoid meeting people and turned towards alcohol to numb his feelings for temporary relief. Recalling the emotional struggle, Aamir said:
“When Reena and I separated that evening, I finished an entire bottle of alcohol, and for the next 1.5 years, I drank every day. I never slept. Mai behosh hojata tha daaru peeke. I was trying to kill myself.”
During the same time, Aamir stopped working on films for a while because he couldn’t focus on anything constructive. But ironically, this personal crisis occurred simultaneously with a professional high because his film, Lagaan, had been released around the same time. The actor recalled one particular memory where a leading publication named him ‘Man Of The Year’ while he was struggling to get over his emotional pain. Aamir explained:
“I was not even working then. Neither did I care to meet anybody. The same year, Lagaan released a newspaper article called ‘Man of the Year, Aamir Khan’. I found it very ironical.”
Aamir Khan wrote love letters with his blood for Reena Dutta
In an older conversation with Simi Grewal, in 1999, Aamir Khan left his fans stunned when he spoke about an impulsive act he did in the name of love. He recalled that during the days of his budding romance with Reena, he once wrote a letter with his blood for her. However, looking back, he admitted that it was a wrong and dramatic gesture. Moreover, even Reena was upset over the letter. Aamir shared that he felt that writing a letter with his blood was a grand way to prove his love for Reena but soon realised that love doesn’t need to go to such extremes. Criticising such unhealthy romantic behaviour, Aamir said:
“You know, I was young, and I thought that… thought it’s a way to express the deep love that I have for her, but today I feel that… I mean, I hear of a lot of kids doing that, and I receive a lot of letters in blood, and I think that’s not a nice thing to do. You don’t need to do that to express your love for a person, so I wouldn’t advise youngsters to do that.”
