The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed Kannappa with a U/A 13+ certificate. Interestingly, it was the Revising Committee (RC) which passed the film. This means that after the Examining Committee (EC) raised objections or reservations, it was referred to the RC.

The RC passed the film but asked for several cuts. They asked the makers to delete and modify certain visuals of blood, dead bodies, heads being cut off and close-up shots of arrow piercings. A 4-second shot of the sunset silhouette was removed. The cut list said that ‘Deleted visuals with yellow red colour’, lasting 21 seconds. A CG text referring to the names of tribes was axed. One of the scenes mentioned was ‘Modified and replaced with an alternate shot of water on deity; deleted close up visuals of leg on diety’.

The CBFC’s RC also asked for changes in dialogues. Words like ‘Pilaka’, ‘Gilaka’, ‘Chavata’, ‘Veedu’, ‘Vadu’ and ‘Anubhavista’ were modified. A dialogue ‘Okadikemo…Gopikalanta’ was deleted.

Finally, the makers had to insert a disclaimer with a voice ‘in normal pace’ stating that ‘the film is a work of fiction inspired by the legendary tale of Bhakta Kannappa of Sri Kalahasti Temple, situated near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. The film is based on the widely known text Sri Kalahasti Mahatyam by Mahakavi Durjeti in 16th Century and on Basavapuranam from 13th Century’. It further clarified that they don’t intend to hurt any community or religious sentiments.

Once these changes were made, the censor certificate was handed over to the makers on June 19. The length of the film, as mentioned on the censor certificate, was 195.02 minutes, that is, 3 hours 15 minutes and 2 seconds.

A day later, on June 20, the makers approached the CBFC once again and voluntarily deleted shots in 10 scenes. The biggest was of 5 minutes and 20 seconds and this was done in the dialogue ‘Jataavi Galajjala Pravaha…’. Then, 3 minutes and 17 seconds of footage was deleted from one of the songs. This way, 12 minutes of 11 seconds of footage was axed from the final version.

The final length of Kannappa is now 182.51 minutes, that is 3 hours 2 minutes and 51 seconds.

Kannappa also stars Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, Mohanlal and others in cameos while the lead role is played by Vishnu Manchu. The film releases worldwide on June 27.
