President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday imposing an additional 25% tariff on India in response to its continued purchase of Russian oil. The executive order of the US president will be applicable after 21 days, i.e., August 27.
“I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” President Donald Trump said in an executive order.
“Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent,” the executive order reads.
The new tariff rate on India is now among the highest levies on all the trading partners of the United States. The recent decision by the US President is a sign that Trump is moving on, making good on his threat to punish the countries that buy Russian oil.
Is this the first tariff by Trump?
The recent tariff imposed by the US President is the second 25% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Indian imports in recent months. Earlier in April, India was included in a border list of countries, which aimed to correct the US goods trade deficits via reciprocal tariff policies. The last order by the Trump administration did not specifically cite the Russian oil but targeted the countries with persistent trade surpluses against the United States.
