Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away in New Delhi on Monday after prolonged illness. He was 81.

Soon after his son and present Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren shared the news on his X handle, condolences started pouring in.

Expressing his pain on Soren’s demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers.” The PM added that he spoke to Hemant Soren and expressed his condolences.

Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule also condoled the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha co-founder who fought for a separate tribal state and said his dedication to the rights and welfare of the people of Jharkhand and tribals will be remembered. “Deeply saddened by the demise of former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Shri Shibu Soren ji. His lifelong dedication to the rights and welfare of the people of Jharkhand and Tribals will always be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with Chief Minister Hemant Soren ji, the Soren family, and his followers during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences,” she wrote on X.
