Devotees Killed In Stampede While Offering Water To Lord Shiva In UP Temple


Two devotees were killed and several others were injured in a stampede at a Shiva temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when devotees were offering water to Lord Shiva in the auspicious month of Sawan.

An electric shock at the temple premises led to panic among devotees and resulting in a stampede. 

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of and has expressed condolences to the bereaved families. The Chief Minister directed the officers to immediately reach the spot and expedite the relief work. The Chief Minister gave instructions for the proper treatment of the injured, the CMO said.

Devotees were offering prayers when a monkey jumped onto an electric wire, causing it to fall on a shed. “This led to an electric current passing through the structure. Medical treatment of the injured is underway. Around 19 people were injured, with two in serious condition,” District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said.

The incident comes a day after eight people were killed in a stampede at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar.
