Rishabh Pant was retired hurt on the first day of the fourth Test between India and England in Manchester on Wednesday.

The India wicketkeeper-batter sustained a foot injury in the 69th over, and could not continue batting. Ravindra Jadeja came out to replace him.

Pant attempted a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes. The ball, however, took and inside edge and ricocheted onto his front boot. Pant called for the physio for treatment.

However, as the treatment needed more time, the umpires asked him to carry on the procedure off the field. He was batting on 37 off 48 deliveries when he was stretchered off.

According to the ICC Playing Conditions, Pant will be eligible to bat again. The section 25.4 states, “A batter may retire at any time during his innings when the ball is dead. The umpires, before allowing play to proceed, shall be informed of the reason for a batter retiring.

“If a batter retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, that batter is entitled to resume his innings.”
