Delhi HC on Wednesday reserved the order on bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other accused in the larger conspiracy of the Delhi riots 2020 case.
According to news agency IANS, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the bail pleas of Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid and others in the Delhi riots conspiracy case, stating that those who conspired against the nation should remain in jail. He argued that long incarceration alone doesn’t justify bail. Tushar Mehta said the riots were pre-planned and timed to coincide with U.S. President Trump’s India visit, aimed at tarnishing India’s image globally. He also alleged Imam formed a Muslim students’ group against JNU’s secular structure.
“If you act against the country, you have no right to bail. This (Delhi Riots 2020) is one of the finest investigations I have come across. We have 58 statements recorded under Section 164 before the court,” Mehta said.
