The National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Saturday wrote to the chief secretary of West Bengal, directing urgent action in the South Kolkata gang-rape case. She also sought the state police’s cooperation for a meeting between a member of the rights panel and the survivor and her family.
Calling the incident “grave,” she said it has “shaken public conscience”. Rahatkar directed that the police must ensure cooperation with NCW member Archana Mujumdar, who will meet the survivor and her family.
The NCW has also sought an immediate and confidential internal medical examination of the survivor and asked that both internal and external medical reports be submitted to the NCW within three days.
Meanwhile, CCTV cameras have been installed at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata, where the alleged gang-rape incident took place on the evening of June 25. The three accused have been remanded to police custody till July 1.

Earlier today, the security guard of the college was also arrested by Kolkata police, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four. The guard has been arrested since the crime allegedly took place inside his room on the college premises and he failed to carry out his duty.
“The security guard was arrested this morning after we found that his replies were incoherent. His presence at the college has been captured in the CCTV installed in the college,” a police officer told news agency PTI.
The officer added that the police were trying to find out whether he was alone on duty at that time or not.
“The guard has been inconsistent with his answers on why he did not act accordingly and stopped the three accused from committing the crime. Also, he needs to reply on why and whose instructions he left his room. This is also a kind of involvement in the crime,” he added.
The survivor has alleged that the security guard did not help her. The 24-year-old woman had gone to the college to fill out a form for a test whens he was forced to stay back. One of the accused, an alumnus who is now a crimimal lawyer, allegedly raped her after she turned down a marriage proposal from him.
The other two accused, who are students of the same college, stood guard and recorded the act on their mobile phones. Notably, results of the medical examination conducted on the survivor have corroborated her gang-rape allegation.
Meanwhile, the college campus, which is located in south Kolkata’s Kasba area, remained under tight police surveillance after the incident was reported. Additional deployment has been made on both inside and around the premises and the guard’s room and union room that are both linked to the crime have been sealed.
