The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has closed proceedings against Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) after confirming the airport operator’s compliance with directives to monitor and publicly disclose aircraft noise levels at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The move comes in response to a petition that raised concerns over excessive night-time noise and lack of transparency in noise data. In its recent order, the NGT bench comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member A Senthil Vel acknowledged that DIAL had adhered to the tribunal’s earlier instructions.
DIAL submitted a report showing that daily aircraft noise levels are now published on the airport’s official website. These readings are captured through Noise Monitoring Terminals strategically placed along runway approach and departure paths. The data is accessible to the public via the Corporate Sustainability section of the airport’s site.
The airport authority also assured the NGT that it would continue to provide monthly updates with daily figures and comply with the permissible noise limits set by government guidelines. Notably, noise data for March 2024 has already been uploaded for public viewing.
Addressing concerns about runway 29/11 and its alleged overuse, the Tribunal clarified that no prior directions had been issued on the matter and hence, no further intervention was required.
With all directives met and transparency measures in place, the Tribunal disposed of the matter, requiring no additional action.
