8th Pay Commission for IAS, IPS Officers: Lakhs of employees work for central government in India, but officers from Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) attract the most attention because of the administrative powers they hold and influence in the public domain. As the 8th Pay Commission is about to be formed and there is quite a buzz about salary revision, the revised payouts of IAS and IPS officers are garnering attention.

Amid such a scenario, what can be expected salary hikes for Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), District Magistrate (DM), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Inspector General (IG) and other officers at a 2.28 fitment factor. 

Hierarchy and pay levels of IAS officers

The basic level job (Class 10 as per 7th Pay Commission matrix) for an IAS officer is Assistant Collector of SDM, who is also known as a Junior Time Scale officer.

A DM is a Junior Administrative Grade (Level 12 officer).

After that Selection Grade starts.

These are Level 13 officers and works as special secretary or a director in a state or central government departments.

The top-most post for an IAS officer in India is Cabinet Secretary (Level 18).  

Hierarchy of IPS officers

The entry-level job for an IAS is Probationary Officer (Level 10). Junior Time Scale starts with Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) post, a Level 10 officer, while Senior Time Scale begins with the Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl. SP) post (Level 11). 

A Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) or DCP in major cities is a Selection Grade (Level 13 officer). A DIG is a Level 13A officer, while an IG is a Level 14 officer. 

A Director General of Police (DGP) belongs to the Apex Scale (Level 17) and is either a state police chief or Commissioner of Police in large cities. 

Directors of Intelligence Bureau, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or National Investigation Agency (NIA) are the top-most IPS officers.

They are Level 18 officers and hold a rank equal to a cabinet secretary.
